YLS Community Law Week

Each year, the YLS Service to the Public Committee plans Community Law Week. 2013 Community Law Week provided legal education, access and assistance to the public through a series of events held April 27-May 2. Events included a student filmmaking contest, Tell it to the Judge and Free Legal Information Booths. Community Law Week is a great opportunity for local attorneys to help bolster public opinion of the bar and its members. Dozens of volunteers made Community Law Week 2013 a success.

Free Legal Information Booths

Each year, volunteers provide general legal information and disseminate brochures at free legal information booths in various locations in Multnomah County.

Tell it to the Judge

This event allows community members to talk directly with a local judge about their questions, concerns, and opinions on the justice system. Volunteers facilitate public interaction with the judges.

The YOUthFILM Project

Community Law Week culminated with a celebration of young filmmakers at the YOUthFILM Project award ceremony and film screening. This filmmaking contest provides students with an opportunity to express themselves creatively, while learning about the justice system and the legacy of the civil rights movement. Participants produced short films or videos based on this year's theme: Realizing the Dream: Equality for All. The top films were screened for the public at the Hollywood Theatre in Northeast Portland. Prizes were awarded by Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas A. Balmer. A reception after the screening was held at Columbia River Brewing. See photos from the event.

Community Law Week would not be possible without the support of our generous sponsors.
