Young Lawyers Section (YLS) - YLS Community Law Week

Each year, the YLS Service to the Public Committee plans Community Law Week. 2008 Community Law Week provided legal education, access and assistance to the public through a series of events held April 28-May 3. This year's Community Law Week theme was The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity. Events included a Dress for Success clothing drive, a student filmmaking contest, Tell it to the Judge, Free Legal Information Booths and Courthouse Tours.

Community Law Week is a great opportunity for local attorneys to help bolster public opinion of the bar and its members. Dozens of volunteers helped make Community Law Week 2008 a success.

Free Legal Information Booths
Each year, free legal information centers are set up at various locations in Multnomah County through out the week. Volunteers provide general legal information and disseminate free brochures.

Tell it to the Judge
This one-day event on May 3 allowed local citizens with questions, concerns or opinions to talk directly with a local judge. Volunteers facilitated public interaction with the judges.

The YOUth FILM Project

2007 was the wildly successful inaugural year for the YOUth FILM Project. See last year's top student films. This year's top films were screened for the public at the Hollywood Theatre in Northeast Portland on April 29. Prizes were awarded at that time by Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice, Paul J. De Muniz. Volunteer helped with set-up, clean-up, and served as greeters.

Dress for Success
Suits and professional clothing were collected during this drive to benefit low-income women who seek to develop their careers.

Courthouse Tours
Free courthouse tours were offereded to the public on April 30. Volunteers partnered with Classroom Law Project court tour guides to lead small groups on tours of the Multnomah County Courthouse and Justice Center.
